Instrument Rating (H)

An instrument rating is required in order to operate a helicopter in bad weather conditions that prevent visual flight by looking ahead at the horizon or other visual cues on the ground. This may be due to cloud or low visibility and in this situation the aircraft has to be flown by reference to instruments inside the cockpit. In the helicopter industry this rating is often a requirement in order to apply for jobs on larger helicopters for example those used for offshore passenger transport or the emergency services.The aim of the IR (H) modular flying training course is to train pilots to the level of proficiency necessary to operate helicopters under Instrument Flight Rules(IFR) and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC).
At Superior Air we offer the MEIR(H), which is carried out using our FNPT II certified helicopter simulator and the A109 helicopter. PBN privileges are included as standard within the MEIR course.

Duration

On a full time basis the course can be completed in 6 to 8 weeks, but it can also be carried out over a longer period on a pay-as-you-go basis, for those unable to commit to a full time schedule.Flight duration is the minimum required by regulation, and is dependent on student performance. More hours may be required at additional cost.

Pre-entry requirements

Either a PPL (H) with night rating, or a CPL(H)
50 hours cross country flight time as PIC, unless a graduate of an integrated course
If not the holder of a ME Type Rating you must posess minimum 70 hours PIC on helicopter, if not completed an ATP(H)/IR, ATP(H), or CPL(H)/IR training course.
Either hold the type rating of the helicopter on which the course will be carried out, or complete the type rating training prior to the course
IR(H) or ATPL(H)/IR Theoretical knowledge exams completed
Valid EASA Class 1/2 medical

Course structure

MEIR(H)
50 hours dual instrument instruction, of which:
40 hours simulator (FNPT II)
10 hours aircraft A109
2.0 hrs MEIR skill test

* No VAT is applicable for CPL holders.

Theoretical Knowledge Requirements

There are 7 theoretical knowledge exams required for the IR (H). These are:

air law
aircraft general knowledge — instrumentation
flight planning and monitoring
human performance
meteorology
radio navigation
communications

Do I need any prior flying experience?

No. Most students have no prior experience at the beginning of airplane or helicopter training.

What are the steps to getting started?

First we recommend that you take an introductory flight lesson. Then get your study materials and book an aviation medical exam.

What is an introductory flight?

An introductory flight will give you the chance to pilot an airplane or helicopter for the first time. This will help you decide if you really want to pursue a pilot’s license plus it will give you a knowledge base for the ground studying. A 30 minute flight is usually enough and with proper guidance from a flight instructor you will be able to discover the magic of flight…

What are the study materials?

The study package contains books , maps , a flight computer and much more to help you understand and get the required knowledge to pass all the written exams. In case you wish to become a commercial pilot you will receive a dvd to use in your pc as the training is made using the CBT method (computer based training) which means that all instruction in the classroom and studying in home is made using state-of –the-art software with all the necessary presentations and you can also submit your training and test results online to your school. This method is the most modern and proven method of ground training around the world

What is an aviation medical exam?

The HCAA requires pilots to have regular medical checkups. These are essentially a simple physical exam that you get from a general practitioner doctor who is cerified by the HCAA as an aeromedical examiner. For the initial issuance of a medical certificate you shall visit a certified aeromedical examination center and by the end of the examination you will get the certificate. The renewal of the certificate is done by certified aeromedical examiners every 12-60 months depending on the age of the pilot and the certificate’s class which is issued according to the type of the license (private, commercial etc.)

Do I need perfect eyesight?

No. You only need vision that is correctable with glasses or contact lenses.

What do I have to do to register for the school?

You should contact us and we will guide you through the whole registration process. We will decide together what method or training option is best for you and then you will take a pre-entry test. After that you will complete a registration form and we will begin a training record for you. That’s all!

What type of aircraft will I be able to fly after I get my license?

Getting the airplane pilot’s license you will be able to fly single engine piston airplanes below 5.700 kgs maximum take off weight. You can also get the multi engine class rating and fly light twins below 5.700 kgs maximum take-off weight. As far as the helicopter types we offer training in the Robinson R22 and then you can get the Robinson R44 Type Rating as well as any other type such as the EC120 Colibri and much more upon request. There is really no limit to the type ratings we can provide for both airplanes and helicopters.

Do I have to get my private pilot’s license before the commercial?

No. There are some benefits to getting a private pilot’s license first but most people take the simpler and cheapest approach and get their commercial pilot’s license right away. In any case we can provide both modular and integrated training.

If I already have a fixed wing license or a helicopter license does this help?

There is a small credit given to a pilot that already has a license so that reduces the price a little bit , yes.

How old do I have to be to get a pilot’s license?

You can start your private pilot’s license training at the age of 16 and you can have a license at the age of 17. Your commercial pilot’s license training can start at the age of 17 and you can get the license at the age of 18.

Am I too old to become an employable commercial pilot?

The short answer is absolutely not. Many companies prefer to entrust an aircraft to a pilot with some life experience. Airlines usually have an age limit as far as hiring first officers with no prior experience but that is usually the age of 34 years old. That still does not mean you cannot work for a small airline and work your way through a big one as a captain or work as a flight instructor until you have more experience and a better cv.

Am I too heavy to train with you?

The Cessna 172 can easily hold someone close to 150 kgs, the R22 has a seat limit of 240 lbs and the R44 a limit of 300 lbs.

Will I find a job after graduating from Superior Air? Have your previous graduates found positions in Airlines?

All our graduates are currently employed in major airlines in Greece and Europe with very good feedback from their employers regarding the level of their training.

How long does the training take to complete?

The private pilot’s license can be obtained in less than 6 months , the commercial pilot’s license can be obtained in 12 months flat.

Can I work at my job and train at the same time?

Yes. We understand that a lot of people have to work to pay for their training and that is why we can offer the distance learning option as far as the ground training is concerned and then customize your flight training schedule around your work schedule.

What time is the school open?

Every day from 8 a.m. until sunset 7 days a week!

When does the school semester begin?

Every student is trained individually so there is no fixed school start date. The only thing that is fixed is the ground training schedule (groundschool) that starts twice a year (March and September) in case you wish to follow the Integrated course. In any other case the distance learning ground training can begin as of tomorrow!

Do you require the full tuition up front?

Absolutely not! Unlike most flight schools you have the option to either pay in three equal deposits or in smaller deposit’s. Your account will be debited every time you fly and the only thing that is not allowed is to fly with insufficient balance for the flight in your account. We try to be as flexible as possible!

What is the best way to fund my flight training?

You can ask your bank for a student’s loan and decide what is best for you. Our school does not interfere with students financials but we can help you by issuing any necessary documentation you might need.

Are accommodations available?

Yes! We have 4 apartments in the city of Megara, just 8 minutes away from the airport in a very organized beautiful area (supermarkets , banks , postal office). We can offer different types of rooms from small apartments for 1 person to large spacious apartments with 2 bedrooms for more.u003cbru003eWe provide free transportation from and to the airport using our corporate vans and cars. The city of Athens is just 40 minutes away by train or car.

Does Superior Air hire their students as pilots?

Absolutely! A lot of our student’s started their career from us as flight instructors or co-pilots in our own airline! This is a great opportunity that can be given to low time talented pilots that would like to work in a very nice and diverse environment getting a great experience of all kinds of aerial operations one could possibly imagine!

Is there a limit to how many students can train in the school at one time?

No. We currently operate enough aircraft to fit our students needs and our fleet keeps growing! We also have enough flight instructors and as you read before we keep hiring! The only limit we always set for training quality purposes is that no more than 8 students will be in the same classroom for ground instruction. So in that case the ground training can be made in shifts to ensure that a logical number of students will attend a course each time.
